Ooit was hij Westfries en heette hij Piet Houtenbos. Maar nu woont hij al zo'n veertig jaar in Manhattan en is hij wereldberoemd als 'Hair Hero' Christiaan. Hij speelt eredivisie in de kappersbranche. Hij bedacht bijvoorbeeld de steile haardracht waarmee zijn oude buurvrouw, zangeres/actrice Grace Jones wereldberoemd werd.

In New York bel je niet zomaar even aan bij een skyscraper. Je meldt je bij de conciërge. En die belt dan naar boven. Dan mag je erdoor, stapt in de lift en laat jezelf binnen in een appartement waarin je kunt verdwalen. Christiaan, type kleurrijke rock 'n roller-in-ruste, komt uit een van de kamers, schudt je hand, vraagt of je koffie wilt en verdwijnt weer.
Om koffie te zetten, denk je.

Maar hij komt terug met twee enorme kartonnen bekers. Heeft-ie even beneden gehaald. Wat zou je dan zelf koffie zetten?
Het verhaal van Christiaan is boeiend. Vrij vertaald: hij is al jaren een van de vijf meest gevraagde kappers voor mode-, film- en lifestylebladen en reclamebureaus in de wereld. Zijn vingers zullen enkele uren na het interview weer spelen met het haar van Victoria Beckham. ,,En daarvoor krijg ik hier nog twee 'Super Models', van dat gelijknamige tv-programma.''
Christiaan komt gemiddeld twee keer per maand naar Nederland. ,,Als ik naar Londen of Parijs ga voor een opdracht, plak ik daar vaak een bezoekje aan mijn moeder in Bovenkarspel aan vast.

Christiaans vader was kapper in Bovenkarspel en regiojournalist voor het Noord-Hollands Dagblad. ,,Ik stond op m'n tiende al in de zaak te helpen met het inzepen van de boeren die zich twee keer per week kwamen laten scheren. In die kapsalon werd de dorpspolitiek bedreven.''
Een persoonsverwisseling bracht Christiaan naar New York. ,,Tijdens mijn dienstplicht in Aruba, was ik kapper bij de mariniers. Daar raakte ik bevriend met een man die Kurt Weil heette. Zijn vrouw adviseerde me in New York te gaan kappen. Zij schreef een brief naar de hoofdredactrice van het blad 'Glamour'. Die haalde me hierheen en zorgde ervoor dat ik snel een baan had als reizende kapper voor modellen, actrices en zangeressen.''

Na een jaar werd duidelijk waarom: ,,Glamour legde mij zo in de watten omdat ze dachten dat die mevrouw Weil de echtgenote was van de componist Kurt Weil. Zij was op dat moment een van de meest gevierde Broadway-actrices onder haar stagenaam Lotte Leyna.''
Binnenkort komen we terug op Sterrenkapper Christiaan. Gevraagd naar wie hij het liefst zou willen knippen hoeft hij niet na te denken: president Obama. ,,Dat kapsel van hem kan best ietsje scherper. Hij heeft er een mooie kop voor.''

If the crowd didn’t know Christiaan prior to the tribute, they certainly would never forget him. The artist came onstage dressed in a tan, plaid suit that would have made Mike Brady jealous. He introduced himself and then, to the audience’s amazement, grabbed a male member of the audience and began running his fingers throughout the man’s hair. As a slideshow began, showcasing Christiaan’s vast amount of amazing editorial work, he began to cut the “model’s” hair at lightening speed. If you looked away for two seconds, you missed 1/3 of the cut! We’d have to say that he may not be about precision, but he’s certainly all about uber-style. The audience caught its collective breath as he made his final snip, then roared so loud, new decibels of sound were created. Christiaan then offered to cut a female’s hair and the words barely left his mouth before hands shot up and women shouted, begging to be chosen. After finishing his second cut in all of three minutes, he invited the audience to produce one more volunteer. Women bum-rushed the stage, evoking fears that a S.W.A.T. team was going to have to be called in for crowd control. A fit little redhead prevailed and Christiaan took it to the hole. One hundred and seventy-seven snips and five minutes later, his workwas done and the audience was breathless once again.

His Work: For more than 40 years, Christiaan has been one of the world’s leading editorial hair stylists, working with fashion designers and celebrities to create iconic, memorable looks that appeared on the covers and within the pages of almost every fashion publication. Why He’s Influential: Christiaan has styled many famous heads throughout his career, from 1980s pop divas Debbie Harry (Blondie) and Grace Jones—who owed their respective blonde tresses and dramatic flat-top to him—to celebrities like David and Victoria Beckham and Madonna. The buzz cut, hair wrapping (with fabric) and the chopped, asymmetrical bob created for a Calvin Klein show are milestones in his career as a risk-taking session artist. A “lucky fluke,” he says, took him from his father’s barbershop in a tiny Dutch village to editorial stardom. “I’ve always been more into the ‘doing’ than the result,” he says, “but I’ve usually been thrilled with the result.”
